'ALTERNATIVE FACTS'
'Alternative Facts' is a fairly new expression, coined by Trump aide Kellyanne Conway on January 23, 2017 to defend Press Secretary's Sean Spicer's description of the crowd size at the Presidential Inauguration in Washington. (“This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration — period — both in person and around the globe.”) Although the expression is new, the idea behind it is not, which I realized as I was putting together the collection of cartoons which is published under that title. I began to see that each of the cartoons that I chose for the collection was my own interpretation of events that I had witnessed or ideas that I considered - my own 'alternative facts.'
This collection is not strictly concerned with the current 'alternative facts' era either, although a few of the cartoons are directly inspired by Trump. Some of the drawings were created more than thirty years ago, but still fit into the 'alternative facts' category.
And the book is also not a collection of political cartoons. The main goal of each cartoon is to make the reader laugh. Over the course of my career I have always felt it was a greater challenge, and provided more satisfaction, to produce a cartoon that was funny rather than one that made a political statement. I hope that 'Alternative Facts' will make a lot of people laugh.
